Review:
First things first, please read Triad before reading this book or this review. This is not a stand-alone and you will be lost. A lot of character development happened in Triad and continues in Equinox. A major part of the story happened in Triad and you'll read about the fallout and recovery in Equinox. Plus, both books are amazing and should be read in order. I doubt you'll regret it. *This review may contain spoilers for Triad if you have not read it first*
I was so excited when Brittany let me know she was finished and asked me to read her book, and I happily obliged since I loved Triad (still in my top 5!). I was not disappointed. The book started where Triad ended, focusing on the fallout of the battle with Xercarus, which left Kalen without his memories for the last two years, Athena's brokenness from her separation from Kalen, and the strain on her connection with her brothers, Atlas and Anders. This part of the story deals with tragedy, loss, and grief on the road to fighting for a cure, saving the bond, and finding out what to do next to clean up the rest of Xercarus' destructive plan. Witnessing Atlas and Anders feel everything through their sibling bond and take care of their sister who is grieving her mate, all while missing Kalen themselves through their new brother bond, really puts the emotions through the wringer.
On their way to finding a cure, we are introduced to more of the Unseen, particularly the fae, and uncover some interesting information about Kalen. We also meet some old acquaintances from the European shifters and drama unfolds. This information provides some answers but provokes more questions in return, regarding Kalen and the rest of Xercarus' plan, more importantly, who took his place. Athena has to learn to trust and rely on her brothers and family for help after her decisions end up hurting her family. After not being prepared to lead as the alpha, she steps into her position, growing her powers, and takes the battle to the new villain's doorstep to heal her family and try to stop the destruction of the Unseen world as they know it.
Ultimately, this story has a good amount of emotional content, ranging from grief, to hope, to love, to forgiveness so you should be prepared for a wonderful experience. Brittany has written these emotions in a way to make fictional, paranormal characters more human and relatable. The plot is captivating and the only break you get is in between the books. There's a bit of spice so I'd recommend readers be 18+. I am already excited for a third book in the series. Equinox is set up for the next sequel and does not end on a cliffhanger, which is a relief. Brittany is a wonderful writer and has captured human emotions with finesse that left me feeling like I need therapy for my nonexistent relationship with fictional characters.
*I was given an advanced reader copy in return for an honest review. The author did not purchase my review or persuade me in any way. These thoughts and words are my own.*
