Review: With Fangs and Claws turned out to be an epic read. Coming in at over 140k words, this is a beast of a book that definitely marks the beginning of an awesome series. I had no idea what to expect and could not see how the events would unfold until it was time. I appreciate that quality in an author's writing.

The main character is a female human, named Darcy, daughter of the Duke of Elverston (nope, completely human... no elves in this fantasy so far). This book in written in a two part fashion, the first being Darcy's life in Elverston, with her familiar life. She was never happy or remotely satisfied where she was, but found ways to seek joy by skirting around the property, spending time with the horse master, Nordred, and learning how to fight with swords. While the Duke and her personal handler saw fit to always beat it out of her, Darcy was resilient. Even finding her way out into the forest to take down her first stag, and become surrounded by four wargen men ("two-souled" or wolf shifter).

These wargen let her go, but later turn up at the castle for a proposition with the Duke. He needs to barter for iron ore and they decide they want Darcy as payment. While fighting every set of the way, Darcy manages to get kidnapped and almost forced into a forbidden marriage by a knight, is found and taken away by her true fated mates, the four wargen brothers and princes of Strelea. Darcy has to decide what path she wants to take, become a Maiden and let herself feel free, or choose the mates she doesn't know if she can allow herself to get close to.

This is not a first sight love but more of a fighting fates kinda trope. Almost with an enemies to lovers feel from Darcy's perspective (not a dual POV book), this is a slow burn romance with an epic fantasy world built and a lot of fighting... Like really good fighting. This is such a descriptive fantasy, that will help your imagination fill in the world around you to make this fantasy feel like a beautiful reality, without being overwhelming or boring with useless information. I love the way Darcy's character develops and the way she handles the situations throughout the book is refreshing. The ending has a little bit of a cliffhanger feel but I feel like it stopped at a great spot to entice readers to get ready for the next book, which I feel is the true beginning of a new era in Darcy's story.
