Storyline Review: Elder is set in Verbenia, a fictional universe based on mythology, Fae and Druids. The Druids are "extinct" to the Fae. The lead character, Eadha, is a high Druid with royal bloodlines in the Tiarna and general of the Laoch (Druid legion). Other main characters are of Fae and Druid origins. Their worlds are separated by an event that Eadha struggled through, yet survived, and prepared for the day they could return home or finish what was started. When visions come, Eadha is thrown into the Fae realm to go on a quest to prepare herself for the fight of her life. She meets many Fae along the way, some welcoming and others not so much. Ultimately, she has to make decisions to help others, be helped or make more sacrifices, even after she has yet to finish healing from her history.
Character Review: Eadha is a fearless leader when it comes to battle, protecting her people and leading an army of Druids. She has had a lot of hurt and sacrifice in her life. Corvis has also had a lot of hurts in his life but his story doesn't really open up until later in the book. You'll see the characters histories unfold like peeling layers of an onion. The unfold with time and might cause some heartache. Aine and Rigel have a special place in my heart because their relationship is the "black sheep" of their families, because they are the light from the darkness of their history, if that makes sense. Each character is well written with a descriptive appearance, personality and charisma that fits each persona.
Writing Review: I appreciate how the author put a lot of effort into accurately depicting each character's diversity in nationality and sexual orientation. I did not notate any errors in the grammar, spelling, punctuation and the editing was wonderfully done. You can tell there was a lot of time and energy spent researching mythology, nationalities and more because of how thorough the depictions of the gods/goddesses powers and their relationships with the Druids & Fae.
Additional Notes: This has been one of the best fantasy books I've read in a long time. The story was compelling and captured my attention page after page. I felt myself being torn with emotions, laughing with the characters, feeling the rush and panic during intense scenes. The characters are rich with descriptions. I felt all communications and relationships were well connected and didn't leave any loose ends open for question. I couldn't put this book down without feeling like I left something behind. If I could read a book again for the first time, it would be this one. I cannot wait to read it again.
