Review: I will admit, I have some heartburn over giving this book 3 stars. The plot is REALLY good. However, I had to dock stars because there are so many holes and jumps in the book that made it really hard to follow. I felt I needed to flip back a few pages to double-check I did not miss things because I was confused a lot.
Overall, I really enjoyed Cora's character and the unfolding of her growth as a person and her powers. I'm really glad Cora is a strong female lead that still needs assistance. I noticed the character has faults, just like we all do, and that made her relatable. Seeing her have worries about the events unfolding when she didn't inform someone was the most relatable thing I've ever read in a story. She has attractions to two people but this storyline isn't based on romance.
Lastly, one thing I enjoyed about this book is the family aspect. In the first book and the beginning of this one, Cora basically shields her brother from the hurdles she's jumping because they only have each other. She begins to trust he can help her with her journey and they begin to grow closer. The ending has a surprise reunion and, while lack of communication made things go a little less than satisfactory, the fact Cora thinks these things to herself was a great addition to the narrative.
Additional Notes: Read First We Drown before you read this one. This is the second book in the series and you will be lost. I didn't realize that until I tried reading the first few pages and realized I missed something, then I found the first book. I picked up "Then We Fly" through NetGalley and these thoughts are my own.
